GM Ren Cen
The 5.5 million sq. ft. Renaissance Center, which was built in 1977, was purchased by General Motors for its global headquarters in 1996. The facility features a 73-story, 1,300-room Marriott Hotel, surrounded by four 39-story office towers totaling a combined 2.3 million sq. ft. Each of the five towers rest atop a five-story podium structure containing 165,000 sq. ft. of retail space. The GM Ren Cen has its own stop along the Detroit People Mover transportation system.
A recently-completed $500-million renovation was the largest multi-use facility renovation in the world. The project included the full renovation of the hotel and office towers, the construction of the five-story, glass-enclosed GM Wintergarden along the riverfront, a 12-foot-wide suspended glass circulation walkway linking the office towers, an 1,100-seat food court, enhanced parking facilities, and the creation of GMnext Showroom – a showcase for GM vehicles and specialty cars.
Millender Center
Just north of the GM Ren Cen is the Millender Center, a mixed-use complex featuring 39,389 sq. ft. of retail space, an 1,850-space parking structure, and a 222,000 sq. ft. Courtyard by Marriott Hotel with 265 guest rooms. The Millender Center, which is connected to the Ren Cen by a weatherproof skywalk, also has its own stop along the Detroit People Mover transportation system.
River East Center
Towers 500 and 600 are connected to Tower 200 of the GM Renaissance Center via a pedestrian skywalk. The 21-story multi-use structures feature ground floor retail and services for tenants and visitors. River East offers a convenient skywalk to the 1,050 covered parking spaces in the Port Atwater Parking Garage.
The Merchants
Office workers, visitors and downtown residents can find an essential mix of specialty shops, services and dining conveniently located in the GM Ren Cen, the Millender Center and the River East Center. Contemporary, casual and workplace apparel needs are addressed by quality retailers like Jos. A. Bank Clothiers and Bobby Chan LLC.
An 1,100-seat food court offers an eclectic culinary selection, while fine dining abounds at the Andiamo Riverfront restaurant, the Seldom Blues jazz and supper club, Asian Village, and the Coach Insignia steakhouse on the 71st and 72nd floors of the Detroit Marriott Hotel. Popular chains such as Starbucks, CVS Pharmacy, Potbelly Sandwich Works, Hallmark and Curves share the Center with a YMCA, the Riverfront 4 Theatres, and 70 other retailers and restaurants. The GM Renaissance Center has a U.S. Post Office and its own zip code.
The Market
Downtown Detroit is experiencing a dramatic economic and cultural rebirth. The Motor City is in overdrive with world-class professional sports facilities, major downtown employment commitments by such Detroit corporate leaders as General Motors, Compuware, Quicken LLC, and exciting residential and hotel development throughout the metro area.
More than 10,000 people work in the GM Renaissance Center. Thousands of people visit daily for meetings, shopping and special functions at the 73-floor Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center hotel. Approximately 140,000 downtown Detroit workers have access to an above-ground transit system, the People Mover, to bring them to the GM Renaissance Center. The adjacent Detroit RiverWalk, a three-mile pedestrian promenade along the Detroit River, attracts thousands of weekly visitors in warm weather months.
The GM Renaissance Center overlooks the Detroit River and Windsor, Canada, and is a short walk to Cobo Center – one of the largest convention centers in the United States. Downtown Detroit is home to three major league sports teams: the Detroit Tigers, the Detroit Lions and the Detroit Red Wings – and Detroit hosted the 2005 All Star Game and the 2006 Super Bowl XL to rave reviews. Visitors come from Canada and throughout the region to enjoy the city's casino action at the Greektown, MGM Grand Detroit and MotorCity casinos.
The GM Ren Cen hosts its own signature events on the riverfront, including summer lunchtime concerts and the Rockin’ on the Riverfront concert series, featuring national talent each week. Outstanding festivals and events energize downtown Detroit all summer, and in September 2007, Grand Prix racing will return to Detroit, while the new Detroit International River Days will extend along the riverfront in June. Music festivals start and end the summer with a techno music festival over Memorial Day weekend and an annual jazz festival over Labor Day weekend.
